NOVAnext: Helping Displaced Federal Workers Transition to New Careers

NOVA helps unemployed federal workers and federal contractors quickly and effectively transition their talents to new careers through a new partnership called NOVAnext. Free of charge to eligible participants, the initiative enables workers to explore how their skills and experience can match in-demand jobs available in the region or gain the skills needed to start an enterprise.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for NOVAnext, applicants must:

  • Be a displaced federal worker or contractor who was laid off on or after February 1, 2025.
  • Reside within the NOVA service area (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park).
  • Have lived in Virginia for at least one year to meet FastForward funding requirements. This applies to FastForward Programs only.*
  • Complete the NOVAnext online application Virginia Career Works will review and confirm eligibility.

*Note About FastForward Programs: FastForward is an accelerated workforce initiative that offers financial assistance to Virginians pursuing industry-recognized credentials and certifications for high-demand jobs across the Commonwealth. These programs are funded through the New Economy Workforce Credential Grant Program and have specific funding guidelines. Applicants may be evaluated for state funding sources before receiving NOVAnext support. NOVAnext covers the student’s portion of the FastForward tuition, making these courses free for eligible participants.

How to Apply

Step 1: Complete the Interest Form

The NOVAnext online application will be available soon. In the meantime, please complete the NOVAnext Interest Form, and we will contact you as soon as the application opens.

Step 2: Complete the NOVAnext Online Application

Once the application is available, applicants must fill it out and provide the following information:

  • Personal information, including contact details and residency verification
  • Employment history, including confirmation of federal employment or contract work and layoff date
  • Funding eligibility assessment to determine qualification for FastForward and Workforce financial assistance (FANTIC)
  • Course selection from the approved training programs in IT, project management, HR or entrepreneurship

Step 3: Eligibility Review and Approval

Virginia Career Works will review the application to confirm eligibility. Applicants may be asked to submit additional documents, such as proof of layoff or residency verification. If other funding sources are available, individuals may be required to complete state tuition assistance forms before final approval.

Step 4: Enrollment Confirmation and Course Start

Once approved, applicants will receive enrollment confirmation and instructions from NOVA Workforce. Participants will then begin their selected course and have access to additional career resources.
