MEET THE GRADS: Erick Palacios-Lopez, First-Gen Student & Pres. of NOVA’s 3D Printing Club

June 13, 2024

Erick Palacios-LopezErick Palacios-Lopez proudly graduated from NOVA last month with an A.S. in information technology. A first-generation student born to Salvadoran parents, Erick is deeply grateful for his family’s sacrifices. He’s also driven to seize every opportunity available to him and looks forward to continuing his education at George Mason University.

When reflecting on his time at NOVA, Erick couldn’t help but recall the lessons he learned and the support he received. He’s especially thankful for his influential mentors, including Dr. Lawrence Nightingale, who helped shape his NOVA journey.

Tell us about yourself and your background.
My parents are from El Salvador, but I was born in the States after they moved here in 2001. I’m thankful I was born here because I’ve had many opportunities, including the chance to attend NOVA.

What brought you to NOVA?
I got waitlisted at Virginia Tech, so I decided to take a gap year after high school. Then, I decided to attend NOVA.

What did you study at NOVA?
I studied information technology. I’ve always been fascinated with computers and technology, so I knew I wanted to major in IT.

Tell us about your role in the 3D Printing Club.
I joined the club during my first semester at NOVA when there were only two other members! Over time, I helped expand the club and eventually became its president. In the beginning, we printed small, simple things and later learned more about 3D printers and how they work. I even learned how to build a 3D printer with the help of club advisor Dr. Nightingale, who I met in my first semester. He’s quite knowledgeable about 3D printing and IT, and I’m grateful to have called him a mentor for the past four semesters.

What lessons will you take away from NOVA?
I’ll take several lessons with me: (1) We all go through significant changes in life. (2) There will always be challenges, but you must persevere and push through. (3) It’s okay to treat yourself occasionally!

What are your goals after NOVA?
After graduation, I will transfer to George Mason through the ADVANCE Program. I’m leaning toward cloud computing. When I get to George Mason, I’ll try to get a job and an internship.

What will you reflect on as you graduate and leave NOVA?
NOVA was a great stepping stone. It brought me to where I am now — and I’ll always be grateful for that.
