MEET THE GRADS: Bianca Watu Finds Community at NOVA, Aims to Give Back

July 11, 2024

Bianca Watu, a vibrant, 23-year-old psychology major, is a first-generation college student with big dreams and an even bigger heart. While she was born in the United States, her family hails from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Below, Bianca shares more about her journey to college, which was as much about finding community as it was about academics.

During her time at NOVA, Bianca worked as a Student Life ambassador at the Woodbridge Campus. She’s always enjoyed supporting people in need — especially adolescents — and it was this passion for helping others that drove her to pursue a degree in psychology. Bianca proudly graduated in May 2024.

I chose to come to NOVA because of its supportive environment and opportunities for personal and academic growth. I now have the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in my academic pursuits at a four-year university.

What did you study at NOVA?
I studied psychology, which has helped me understand how to provide care that benefits a whole community. As mental health awareness increases, the demand for mental health professionals is growing right along with it.

Reflecting on your time at NOVA, could you share some memorable experiences?
As a Student Life ambassador, I tried to create a welcoming environment for my peers. I connected with so many people through my work with Student Life, and that really expanded my college experience. I would like to thank Antonia “Toni” De Luz, Student Life coordinator at Woodbridge, for fostering such a fun and supportive atmosphere.

The professors at NOVA are amazing. They provide personalized support, encourage critical thinking and offer valuable insights into their fields of expertise. Plus, the friendships I’ve built with my fellow students are truly special.

What was the biggest challenge you faced as a college student?
There were times when it felt overwhelming trying to balance everything — work, school, a social life! I managed my stress by spending time with my friends and family, being patient with myself and relying on my faith. It’s important for students to use campus resources, too; talk to a counselor if you need support.

Describe yourself in three words.
I would describe myself as kind-hearted, loving and hardworking.

Where do you see yourself after NOVA?
I plan to transfer to George Mason University to complete my degree in psychology with a concentration in developmental psychology. After Mason, I’d like to work as a registered behavioral technician while pursuing a master’s degree in social work. My ultimate dream is to become a licensed clinical social worker specializing in adolescent mental health.

Do you have any final thoughts?
As a graduate of the Class of 2024, I’m grateful for the education and support I received at NOVA. I feel prepared and motivated to pursue my career aspirations, and I’m excited to make a real difference in the lives of others.
