National Nursing Month Spotlight, Yency Jovel Who Always Knew She Was Meant to Save Lives

June 16, 2023

Yency Jovel, a recent NOVA graduate, has always been taught how important education is. To her, going to college and continuing her education pursuits was not a question. She is determined to continue pursuing her bachelor's degree, then master's program, and eventually doctorates – while working in the medical field. Her graduation from NOVA's rigorous nursing program sets her on a path toward success in an in-demand field while the region goes through a nursing shortage.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background:
I am a first-generation college student. My mom is from Honduras, and my dad is from Mexico. They immigrated here when I was just a child, and we started our new lives in the US. Even at a young age, I knew I wanted to work in the medical field.

I have been happily married for six years and have a four-year-old son. He is the pride and joy of my family -- and deeply loved.

I have always loved education and valued school. I have plans on going further in education and obtaining my bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and then eventually a doctorate. I truly know how important education is, and my parents have instilled that in me to go far in education.

I feel truly blessed to have made it this far and can not wait to contribute to positive change in my community.

What brought you to NOVA?
NOVA partnered with my Westfield high school, and advisors from NOVA came to talk to us. I felt super appreciative of their services because I was a first-generation student with many questions about higher education. After finishing high school, I immediately enrolled at NOVA.

What did you study at NOVA?
I knew that I had always wanted to be a nurse and that NOVA had a great program. It was the best choice. It is super close to home and affordable. I completed many transferable classes for when I would transfer to a university.

Tell Us About Your Experience at NOVA, i.e., professors you've liked and friends you've met.
I enjoyed my science classes the most as they were interesting. I have been through countless courses from bioethics, stats world history, and literature – and have enjoyed all of them. I had a good blend and foundation that set me up for success in the rigorous nursing program.

I have made wonderful friends, who I continue to talk to, who are also trying to become nurses or have a similar career path. The professors loved teaching, and they enjoyed what they did. I must thank all the nursing professors who were instrumental in my success.

What would you tell a student coming to NOVA?
I would tell them not to think twice and to do it. It is such a great school with so many campuses. NOVA offers an array of courses with great teachers at an affordable price. Cost is a significant factor in education for college students and young people. NOVA tailors itself so that more people have access to quality education. It is a stepping stone for higher education or an advanced career path.

I recommend to anyone, any age group or career path, to look into and explore all the programs.

It can open doors for so many people. It opened doors for me. I am super proud to have graduated from here. Go Nighthawks!
