Karla Nicole Barrera (Colombia, Northampton Community College, Early Childhood Education,
2022-23) knew she wanted a career in education ever since she was a child. When she was in
elementary school, Karla played teacher to kids in her neighborhood, educating them about the
things she learned in school and even sending them homework to review for the following day.

CCI Alumnus Elfis Adu Raises Awareness about Marine Conservation by Educating Youth in His Local
Community
Elfis Adu (Indonesia, Entrepreneurship, Northern Virginia Community College, 2018-2019) has been
working in ocean conservation at Thrive Conservation since December 2021. As an education
officer, he is entrusted with educating his local community about the importance of marine
conservation. Currently, Elfis and his team at Thrive are monitoring and working towards the
protection of endangered species and protected marine animals, such as mantas and sea turtles.

Pathways to Success Program 2023: Tackling Global Challenges and Building Sustainability with
Locally Led Solutions
January marks the mid-point of the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program. After
completing the fall semester and enjoying a much-deserved winter break, the CCI participants
take part in the CCI Program’s annual mid-year Pathways to Success Program (PSP). The PSP is
designed to build participant skills in leadership, communications, and critical thinking.
The PSP also provides opportunities for self-reflection, goal setting, and networking.
