SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY (program on
hold for 2005-2006)
Certificate MEC
Purpose: The Surgical Technology curriculum is designed to provide
students an opportunity to practice in operating rooms as a member
of the surgical team. Surgical technologists fill the roles of
circulator, scrub, or second assistant.
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have:
1. Been admitted to NVCC at the Annandale Campus.
2. Received a high school diploma or GED; or have a license,
certification or registration as a health care provider.
3. Attained at least 18 years of age.
4. Completed high school (or college courses) in biology or
chemistry with a C grade or better.
5. Completed college English and math placement tests and met
required placement for English 111 and Math 120 or 126.
6. Shown evidence of good physical and mental health.
7. Been CPR certified.
8. Completed required immunizations.
9. Interviewed with the assistant dean and/or instructor.
Certification Eligibility: The Liaison Council on Certification
for the Surgical Technologist (LCC-ST) offers a national certifying
examination to graduates of programs accredited by the Commission
on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
NVCC's program received initial accreditation October 2000.

Total credits for the Surgical Technology Certificate = 36.
1 All students must have
completed MDL 108 or NAS 161 with a grade of C or better before
entering into the second semester. All students must have completed
NAS 150 or NAS 162 with a grade of C or better before entering
into the third semester.
2 NUR 141, 142 are each
taught in 8-week segments in the first semester.
3 NUR 209, Surgical Procedures
I, is taught the first 8-weeks of the 2nd semester and NUR 210,
Surgical Procedures II, is taught the second 8-weeks.
