NURSING
Associate in Applied Science Degree MEC
Purpose: The program in Nursing is designed to prepare students
to participate as contributing members of the health team, rendering
direct care to patients in a variety of health care facilities
and agencies. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students
will be eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination
(NCLEX) leading to state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
and are qualified to assume registered nurse positions in hospitals,
nursing homes, clinics, physicians' offices, HMOs, and other
community-based settings.
Transfer Information: Credits earned by completing this degree
will transfer to George Mason University’s B.S.N. program,
and to the B.S.N. in Nursing at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET
and Old Dominion University at Norfolk, VA.
Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements
for Allied Health Programs. (See page 101.)
Additional Admission Requirements:
1. Attend a Nursing information session.
2. Meet prerequisites for admission to Nursing.
a. Hold a high school diploma or GED.
b. Have completed one unit of high school level algebra and
two units of science (1 unit of biology and 1 unit of chemistry)
with a grade of C or better.
c. Qualify for MTH 126 through acceptable score on the college
placement test.
d. Complete ENG 111, NAS 161-2, with a C or better, and SDV
101 Oriention to Health Care or SDV elective.
3. Take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Pre-Admission
Examination and achieve scores at the 45th percentile in all
areas on the Pre-Admission Examination. Remedial assistance
is available
through courses and/or the learning
resource center for students who do not achieve acceptable scores.
Students may retake the exam until the required scores are obtained.
4. Submit a completed portfolio to the Nursing office within
the specified mail-in period. Portfolios postmarked before or
after the mail-in period will not be accepted. Students will
be accepted into the program in the order received based on the
date of receipt of the completed portfolio. Students not accepted
into the program must re-submit a complete portfolio for the
following year.
5. Take Basic First Aid course prior to registering for a NUR
course.
6. Have Healthcare Provider CPR prior to registering for a NUR
course.
Special Program Continuation Requirements: If general
education courses are not completed before acceptance into the
nursing program, then they are to be taken in the corresponding
semester as indicated in the curriculum plan. Students may not
proceed to the next sequential nursing course without having completed
the appropriate general education coursework.
Licensure Requirements: The Virginia State Board of Nursing
reserves the right to deny licensure to any candidate who has
been convicted of a crime or any offense relating to the abuse
of alcohol and/or use or sale of controlled substances in Virginia
or any other state. Any applicant to the Nursing program who
has been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony must consult
with the Assistant Dean of Nursing prior to placement into the
Nursing program.
Re-Admission: Students who leave the Nursing program
and wish to be re-admitted must meet the requirements for initial
admission into the program. Any developmental studies that were
prescribed at the time the student left the program must have
been satisfactorily completed. Students wishing to be re-admitted
to the NVCC Nursing program will be required to satisfactorily
complete NUR 116, Skill Competency Assessment. Readmission is
based on space availability.
Transfer and Advanced Placement: Nursing credits earned
at other institutions are reviewed by the program head to determine
if the courses in question apply to the curriculum and/or if substitutions
may be made within the curriculum. Students who transfer to NVCC
with prior nursing courses will be required to satisfactorily
complete NUR 116, Skill Competency Assessment.
Advanced placement is available for Licensed Practical Nurses
(LPNs) wishing to enter the Nursing program with advanced standing.
LPNs must attend an LPN-RN Information Session for detailed information.
LPN to RN Transition Program: The transition course
is designed to acknowledge the previously acquired skills of the
LPN and begin the development of professional nursing skills.
Upon successful completion of the transition course, NUR 115 LPN
to RN Transition (3 cr.), the LPN is awarded advanced placement
standing into the second year class. The transition course is
offered in the spring semester of the academic year.
The interested applicant should attend a Nursing Information
Session and apply to the College. The LPN must meet all prerequisite
and co-requisite requirements as do the generic nursing students
to fulfill the A.A.S. degree requirements. The LPN is exempt,
however, from taking the TEAS entrance exam, and is not required
to have high school Biology, as a prerequisite.

graduate from a degree program, students entering NVCC Fall
1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency skills as
described
in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs
of this catalog. Students in this program may take HIT 130 – Intro.
to Healthcare Information Systems or take the NVCC computer
competency
test.
