| MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY
Associate in Applied Science Degree MEC
Purpose: The curriculum is designed to prepare the students
for certification and employment as medical laboratory technicians
in hospital laboratories, private laboratories, physicians' office
laboratories, health department laboratories, and industrial
medical
laboratories. Upon completion of the program graduates will be
eligible to take the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(ASCP) Board of Registry, the National Credentialing Agency (NCA)
and other national certification exams.
Transfer Information: Transfer Information: NVCC has
a transfer agreement to complete the online B.S. in Clinical Laboratory
Science at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a formal articulation
agreement with George Mason University to complete a B.S. in Medical
Technology.
Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements
for Health Technology Programs. (See page 101.) Additional Admission Requirements:
1. Attendance at Medical Laboratory Technology Information Session.
(This satisfies the "Interview with Program Head" requirement.)
2. Satisfactory scores on the NVCC placement/assessment tests:
ENG 111, Math 163 placement eligibility.
3. Evidence of high school graduation, a General Educational
Development (GED), or college degree.
4. Three high school math courses to include algebra and geometry
with a final grade of C or better.
5. One high school biology course with lab or its equivalent
(BIO 101) with C or better.
6. One high school chemistry course or its equivalent (CHM
001) with C or better.
College level math and science courses supercede high school
requirements: Examples include BIO 101, CHM 101 or 111, MTH 163.
Special Accreditation Status: The program is accredited
by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences
(NAACLS).

Total credits for the A.A.S. Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
= 72.
To graduate from a degree program, students entering
NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency
skills as described
in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs
of this catalog. Students in this program may take HIT 130 – Intro.
to Healthcare Information Systems or take the NVCC computer
competency
test.
1 The PED requirement
may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED
220, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.;
or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered
as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.
2 SPD 110 Intro. to Speech
Communication or SPD 126 Interpersonal Communication may be substituted
for SPD 229.
3 The social science elective
may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history,
political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
