[ NVCC Home Page | Catalog Search | Table of Contents | Instructional Programs | Previous Page | Next Page ]
Purpose: The curriculum is designed to prepare students to produce diagnostic images of the human body through safe application of x- radiation. The radiographer is a central member of the health care team and assists the radiologist, a physician specialized in body image interpretation. Upon successful completion of degree requirements, the student will be eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) examination leading to certification as a Registered Technologist in Radiography: A.S., R.T.(R).

Transfer Information: NVCC has formal articulation agreements for transfer to the B.S. in Health Sciences-Health Care Management at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET and Old Dominion University at Norfolk, VA, as well as the B.S. in Health Occupations Education at Virginia Tech.

Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements for Annandale Campus Health Technology Programs. (See pages 86.)

Additional Admission Requirements:

In addition to meeting the requirements to be admitted to NVCC and the Health Technology programs, you must meet specific requirements to be admitted to the Radiography A.A.S. Degree Program. These include:

1. Satisfactory scores on NVCC placement tests to qualify for ENG 111 and MTH 120.

2. Completion of NAS 150, Human Biology, 4 credits, with a grade of C or better.

3. Attendance at a Radiography Information Session.

4. A clinical observation.

5. The American Registry of Radiologic Technology requires an applicant to be of good moral character. "Generally, the conviction of either (a) a felony or (b) any offense, misdemeanor or felony involving moral turpitude, indicates a lack of good moral character for registry purposes. Those who have been convicted of a crime may be eligible for registration if they have served their entire sentence, including probation and parole, and have had their civil rights restored." For further information contact the program head.

Continuation Requirements:

1. As required by the Joint Review Committee on Radiologic Education, students who become pregnant while attending the Radiography program must notify the program head immediately. Under no circumstances may a pregnant student continue instruction in a radiation environment when she has exceeded the safe limits as specified by the maximum permissible dose level for a pregnant occupationally exposed student.

2. All incomplete grades (I) must be resolved prior to taking the next course in the sequence.

Special Accreditation Status: The Radiography program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
