MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

Purpose: The curriculum is designed to prepare the students for certification and employment as medical laboratory technicians in hospital laboratories, private laboratories, physicians' office laboratories, health department laboratories, and industrial medical laboratories. Upon completion of the program graduates will be eligible to take the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry and other national certification exams.

Transfer Information: NVCC has formal articulation agreements for transfer to the B.S. in Health Sciences-Health Care Management at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET and Old Dominion University at Norfolk, VA, as well as the B.S. in Health Occupations Education at Virginia Tech.

Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements for Annandale Campus Health Technology Programs. (See page 86.)

Additional Admission Requirements:

1. Attendance at Medical Laboratory Technology Information Session. (This satisfies the "Interview with Program Head" requirement.)

2. Satisfactory scores on the NVCC placement/assessment tests: ENG 111, Math 126 placement eligibility.

3. Evidence of high school graduation, a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or college degree.

4. Two high school math courses or equivalent with C or better.

5. One high school biology course with lab or its equivalent (BIO 101) with C or better.

6. One high school chemistry course or its equivalent (CHM 001) with C or better.

Special Accreditation Status: The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Total credits for the A.A.S. Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology = 72.

1 The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 220, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 207, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.

2 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
