HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Purpose: The curriculum is designed to prepare students to work as health information technicians in a health record service located in hospitals, consulting firms, health centers, pharmaceutical companies, medical research institutions, physicians' offices, and other health-related facilities. Some of the technical functions performed include health data analysis, coding, abstracting, and reporting for patient care. Documents may include quality studies, legal requirements, and reimbursement protocols. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the national accreditation examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association.

Transfer Information: NVCC has a formal articulation agreement for transfer to the B.S. in Health Sciences-Health Care Management at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET.

Students must comply with all General Admissions Requirements for Annandale Campus Health Technology Programs. (See page 86.)

Additional Admission Requirement: Students must have achieved a keyboarding speed of 45 words per minute.

Special Accreditation Status: The Health Information Technology program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), in cooperation with the Council on Accreditation and Education of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

1 The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 220, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 207, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.

2 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
