[ NVCC Home Page | Catalog Search | Table of Contents | Instructional Programs | Previous Page | Next Page ] Purpose: The curriculum is designed to provide a broad foundation which will prepare students to enter any of the varied fields in criminal justice or to prepare for professional advancement. The occupational objectives for students include local, state, and federal enforcement officers, police officers, private or government investigators, adult/juvenile correction officer, probation/parole officers and counselors, security director (manager), loss prevention director, classification manager, and personnel clearance administrator. Most of the ADJ courses in this curriculum are “core courses” that provide a basic entry-level foundation in both criminal justice and security administration. These courses must be taken by ALL STUDENTS in this program. At several points in the curriculum “course options” are provided for selection by the students. Transfer Information: NVCC has a formal ADJ articulation agreement with George Mason University (GMU). Credits awarded in the NVCC ADJ A.A.S. degree program will transfer to GMU under the “2 + 2” curricula agreement. Exceptions are the STD elective and PED (Physical Education) courses. The NVCC ADJ A.A.S. degree will accommodate those students who plan to transfer to GMU to complete their Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice (see the GMU/NVCC ADJ Transfer Brochure for further information). NVCC also has a formal ADJ articulation agreement with Eastern Kentucky University located in Richmond, Kentucky. In addition, many other four year colleges and universities have degree programs in Criminal Justice. Since these colleges/universities vary in their requirements, consult a counselor or your faculty advisor, or preferably consult a particular college/university directly regarding course requirements and transferability of NVCC courses. Special Curriculum Admission Requirements: Students are advised that many criminal justice and private/government security agencies require excellent moral character and a written record of conduct prior to consideration for employment.
Total credits for the A.A.S. Degree in Administration of Justice = 65. Although not required as part of this program, students planning to transfer to George Mason University (GMU) may wish to complete eight hours of a laboratory science while attending NVCC. Check the current GMU Catalog or contact a GMU faculty advisor if you have questions. 1 Students interested in a career in the field of corrections should take corrections courses as ADJ electives. 2 The PED requirements may be met by one of the following options: PED 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr., plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr., plus RPK 205, 207, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1- credit and a 2-credit course. 3 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology). Psychology 201-202 or Sociology 201-202 are recommended. 4 The MTH elective should be approved by faculty advisor. 5 An alternative IST course may be selected if approved by faculty advisor.
