NVCC General Education Goals and Objectives

    The College has established goals and objectives for each degree program to enhance your learning experiences beyond the major area of study. The following are the College's general education goals and objectives:

Goal: Students will demonstrate college-level communication skills.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Write in organized, clear, and grammatically correct English appropriate for a specific subject and audience.
  2. Speak English fluently, competently, and confidently.
  3. Understand and interpret both written texts and oral presentations in English.

Goal: Students will develop skills to enhance life-long learning.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Value life-long learning.
  2. Use library and other appropriate resources to retrieve information.
  3. Develop time management skills.

Goal: Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Differentiate among facts, opinions, assumptions, and inferences.
  2. Formulate and test hypotheses.
  3. Generate and evaluate alternative solutions to problems.
  4. Make valid judgments and rational decisions.
  5. Demonstrate intellectual curiosity, independence of thought, imagination, and creativity.

Goal: Students will display general knowledge and historical consciousness.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the significance of time and place.
  2. Display a knowledge of American culture.
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge of history, literature, the arts, science, mathematics, the social sciences, language, and communication, and of relationships among various disciplines.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary issues, and the historical and cultural context from which these issues developed.
  5. Demonstrate a knowledge of and appreciation for cultural variety.

Goal: Students will understand and be able to interpret and manipulate numerical data.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Perform basic mathematical operations and apply them to practical situations.
  2. Read, interpret, and analyze graphs, tables, statistics and survey data.
  3. Identify and use available resources related to quantitative problem-solving.

Goal: Students will understand the impact of science and technology and will develop skills needed to use modern technology.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of fundamental scientific principles.
  2. Demonstrate the applications and limitations of the scientific method.
  3. Understand the historical/cultural context in which scientific/technological issues developed.
  4. Analyze the cultural, political, and ethical implications of scientific and technological issues.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate use of instruments of modern technology.
  6. Use a computer system, both hardware and software, appropriate to the discipline or program of study.

Goal: Students will enhance their social and educational values.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Display academic honesty.
  2. Identify and evaluate ethical issues and conflicts.
  3. Set personal goals.
  4. Take responsibility for their own actions and understand the consequences of those actions.
  5. Feel free to express their own viewpoints while maintaining respect for the viewpoints of others.
  6. Demonstrate respect for others, including those of all ages, races, cultures, national origins, religions, genders, and abilities.
  7. Contribute to their community and society.
  8. Recognize the importance and responsibility of the individual in our democratic society.

Goal: Students will recognize wellness as being a dynamic process in developing a healthy lifestyle.

Objectives: Students should be able to:

  1. Practice physical fitness activities appropriate to their individual lifestyles.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of emotional, physical, and psychological wellness and how these affect their lives.
  3. Make positive behavioral changes based upon attitudes, values, behaviors, and skills providing physical and emotional well-being.
