The Extended Learning Institute (ELI) offers courses to students for whom it is inconvenient to attend class. Students may complete most coursework at home. Each ELI course uses one or more of the following media: videotape, cable TV, World Wide Web, computer programs on disk or CD ROM, audiotape, and voice mail. Exams are taken on campus in a Testing Lab. In limited situations, a proctor from outside the College may administer the exams. Please check the hours of the campus testing lab prior to taking tests.
How to Register. For ELI registration information call (703) 323-3368. ELI Office Hours are 8:30AM-5:00PM, Monday through Friday (after office hours, you may leave a recorded message). You may register for ELI courses through campus registration procedures, including telephone registration by NOVAnet, the same as for any NVCC course. You may register directly through ELI by mail or in person if you are interested only in ELI courses. ELI cannot accept registrations for campus classroom courses. (Note: If your address has changed since the last time you used NOVAnet, please contact the ELI office.)
Registration Procedure. Students new to NVCC complete the Application for Admission form, the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates, and the Registration and Tuition Worksheet. All forms are included in this schedule and on the NOVA website (www.nvcc.edu). If you have previously enrolled in credit courses at NVCC, fill out only the Registration and Tuition Worksheet. You may pay by check, money order, VISA, MasterCard, or agency contract. Mail the completed forms and your tuition to the Extended Learning Institute, Attention: Registration, Northern Virginia Community College, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, Virginia 22003-3796.
ELI Orientation. Students new to ELI should attend a one-hour ELI Orientation on Friday, August 27, 1999, starting at 7:00PM at the Richard J. Ernst Community Cultural Center forum at the Annandale Campus. An orientation video is also available in campus LRCs and on cable.
Course Length. ELI courses are 16 weeks. You may request more time if your work is satisfactory and you have completed at least half of the required work. See your ELI Syllabus for details.
Special Information. When registering for sequential courses, e.g., ENG 111 and ENG 112, sign up for only one course at a time. If you failed an ELI course, you may not re-enroll in that same section without permission of the instructor. To take 12 or more credits simultaneously through ELI, you must obtain permission from the director of the Extended Learning Institute. Call 323-3368 for information.
Financial Aid Recipients. Most ELI courses can be used to determine eligibility for financial aid or loan deferments. Contact the College Financial Aid Office for information.
Auditing ELI Courses. If you choose to audit an ELI course, you are not required to do any assignments and you will not receive credit. Your grade will not appear on your College transcript. The regular tuition rate is charged.
Course Materials. A Syllabus will be mailed within a week after you have registered. If you have not received it within 3 weeks, contact ELI immediately at 323-3368. After 4 weeks, ELI will assume you have received your Syllabus.
Text Ordering Service. You may order textbooks and other course materials, including Course Guides, by phone, fax, or mail. Call 1-888-SHIP-TEXT for more information. (You may also purchase course materials in a campus bookstore.)
Refund Period. Requests for refunds must be made in writing to ELI and postmarked within the time period specified by the College. Details are provided in the materials sent to you. These deadlines may occur before the published add/drop period for on-campus courses.
ELI Course Withdrawal. You may withdraw from the course without grade penalty any time during the time period specified by the College by writing to ELI. Details are included in the Syllabus sent to you. Courses for Degrees and Certificates. ELI offers all courses required for degrees in Business Administration, Engineering, General Studies and a new degree in Liberal Arts. In addition, ELI is developing the courses required for degrees in Business Management (including specialization in Public Management) and Information Systems Technology.
World Wide Web: Some ELI courses use the World Wide Web. For more information, see ELI’s Web site: http://eli.nvcc.edu. You may start your Web course when you receive materials from ELI with your official enrollment date. You must use a standard Web browser such as Netscape Navigator (version 3.0 or later) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 3.0 or later).

ELI COURSES
Register for ELI’s STD 100 and LBR 105 early in your college studies. Both courses will help you succeed at NVCC.
If you have trouble reading or if your schedule does not permit regular study, ELI may not be for you. Please look over your course materials as soon as you get them.
