Understanding the Printed Class Schedule Symbols
The following symbols that are listed in the print schedule can tell you a great deal about a course. In most cases there is additional information explained at length in a course’s online listing.
– Important Info Online: Important details about this course are included in the online listing. See Locating Course Details or Course Notes to find out how to access this information before enrolling in the course.
– Online course: The course is taught entirely online, with the possible exception of an introductory meeting and/or exam. A reliable computer and Internet connection are essential for this course.
– Hybrid Course:The course combines several class meetings with online instruction you would do from home or a campus computer lab. A reliable computer and Internet connection are essential for this course. See course details online for specifications. See Hybrid Classes for more information on hybrid courses.
H – Honors Course: A more challenging version of the course, with additional requirements. See the Honors section of this Schedule for more information on the benefits of honors courses and their requirements.
– Instructor’s Permission Required: You must speak to the instructor to get permission to enroll in the course; otherwise, enrollment is blocked.
– Restricted Admission: The course is only for people admitted to a particular program or who meet other pre-existing qualifications. Contact the academic department for more information.
O – Off-campus location: The course is not taught in the main campus facility. See Off-Campus Locations for details and addresses.
W – Weekend Course: The course meets entirely during the Friday evening through Sunday time frame. It may run the entire semester or may only last a few weeks.
$ – Additional Fee Required: Indicates that the course involves additional expenses beyond the cost of tuition. Examples are off-site facility fees for golf, scuba diving or bowling, or the hourly fees for applied music courses.
Specific to Extended Learning Institute:
– In-Person Meetings: For ELI courses that also require in-person class meetings such as labs. See the online course listing under ELI for specific dates, times and locations.
– eNova: For ELI (Distance Learning) courses. This course requires online class meetings at preset times at your home computer. Required headset and microphone can be purchased at campus bookstores. A reliable computer with Internet connection is essential for this course.
- Print-Based Course: ELI course uses textbooks, study guides, and an assortment of non-Internet technologies such as video, voicemail, and CD-Rom.
How the Schedule Works
The NVCC Schedule of Classes lists courses for the semester alphabetically for all six campuses, the Extended Learning Institute, and the Arlington and Reston Centers. You may select your courses from any campus for any day or time, unless otherwise noted. Simply choose the section you wish to take and copy the information down on your Class Schedule Worksheet.
The printed schedule is subject to change. Always check the online listing, which may be updated after the schedule is printed.
CLASS TIMES
Make sure your class times do not overlap, even by a few minutes-you
will not be able to register for classes that conflict.
