| RESPIRATORY THERAPY
Associate in Applied Science Degree MEC
Purpose: The curriculum is designed to prepare students
as effective members of the health care team in assisting with
diagnosis, treatment, management, and preventive care of patients
with cardiopulmonary problems. Upon successful completion of
the
program, students are eligible to take the Entry Level examinations
leading to certification as a Certified Respiratory Therapist
(CRT) and state licensure as a respiratory
care practitioner (RCP).
Transfer Information: Although transfer is not the primary purpose of an A.A.S. program, NVCC has articulation agreements that facilitate the transfer of this and other career-oriented programs to selected senior institutions. Students interested in transfer should contact a counselor or their faculty advisor early in their program.
Students must comply with all General Admission Requirements
for Allied Health Programs. (See page 104.)
Additional Admission Requirements:
1. Attendance at a Respiratory Therapy Information session.
2. Students must qualify for ENG 111 and MTH 126 through acceptable
scores on NVCC placement tests.
3. One unit of high school level chemistry or physics with a
grade of C or higher within the last ten years (successful completion
of college science and math courses may be substituted for high
school requirements) is strongly suggested but not required.
Completion Requirement: Students must comply with all
Continuation Requirements for Allied Health and Nursing Students
(see page 105).
Special Accreditation Status: The program is accredited
by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education
Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Committee on Accreditation
for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

To graduate from a degree program, students entering
NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency
skills as described
in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs
of this catalog. Students in this program may take HIT 130 – Intro.
to Healthcare Information Systems or take the NVCC computer
competency
test.
