Purpose: The curriculum is designed primarily for students who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete the baccalaureate degree in Computer Science. The curriculum emphasizes the study of the science of computing and the use of computing in a scientific setting.
Transfer Information: Students are advised to work closely with the faculty and counseling staff for program and course scheduling. Electives should be chosen carefully to meet requirements of transfer institution. The responsibility for proper course selection rests with the student.
Recommended Preparation: Satisfactory completion of the following high school units or equivalent: 4 units of English and 4 units of college preparatory mathematics.
1 Students with prior programing experience or Advanced Placement credit should talk to a Computer Science Academic Advisor to determine the appropriate first course to take in the NOVA Computer Science course sequence. The credits not earned by bypassing the required course(s) must be replaced by taking advanced mathematics courses (MTH 285 Linear Algebra, MTH 286 Discrete Mathematics, or MTH 277 Vector Calculus) or CSC 206,Assembly Language, or EGR 265 Digital Electronic and Logical Design, in order to fulfill the minimum credit-hour requirements for the degree.
2 Although students who have graduated with a transfer-oriented A.A., A.S., or A.A. & S. degree or any baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited United States institution of higher education will have most of their general education considered as met, they must meet the math requirement specified for this program. Exceptions must be approved by the division dean responsible for the student's curriculum.
3 The social science elective may be selected from the social/behavioral sciences courses listed under General Education Electives. All electives should be selected in conjunction with an advisor and after examining the requirements at the transfer institution.
4 Students may substitute the SDV 101 Orientation section related to this program.
5 ENG 125 may be substituted with the advice of a counselor or academic advisor according to requirements of transfer institutions.
6 The following courses are not required to complete the A.S. degree; however, a baccalaureate degree in Computer Science requires more mathematics courses than are listed in this program. Depending upon the requirements of the transfer institution, students may enhance their preparation for transfer by taking MTH 286 Discrete Mathematics, MTH 277 Calculus III, and/or MTH 285 Linear Algebra.
7 The science elective may be selected from biology, chemistry (excluding CHM 101–102), physics, geology, or natural science courses with a lab component, listed under General Education Electives. Some four-year colleges require a two-semester sequence.
8 General Education Elective may be met by one of the courses listed under General Education Electives.
9 Humanities/fine arts elective may be selected from the humanities/fine arts courses listed under General Education Electives. Elective should be selected with advice of a counselor or academic advisor to meet requirements of transfer institution.
