VCCS Scheduled Outage: My VCCS, Student Email, Online Admissions App

Beginning 12:00AM, Thursday, October 2, 2008, and ending 3:00AM, October 2, 2008, VCCS engineers will be performing scheduled maintenance and upgrades to the Directory Services database server. As a result, users will be unable to access My VCCS, Student Email and the Online Admissions application during the 3-hour outage window.

VCCS has added 4 new servers to handle the load of 12 colleges starting fall today. Systems came back on line a little before 1 pm and performance is expected to improve throughout the afternoon.

Loudoun Campus \ Reston Center: Power Outage - UPDATE | posted 8/19/2008

At this time, Loudoun Campus (LO) and Reston Center are without network and telephone services as a result of the power outage that occurred at LO this afternoon.  ITSS Engineers continue to work to resolve the problem.  Currently, there is no estimated time to restoration of services.

Blackboard 7:  Scheduled Outage 10PM Sat, 8/9/08 - 10PM Sun, 8/10/08

Beginning Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 10:00 PM, and ending on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at 10:00 PM, VCCS will be performing upgrades to Blackboard 7.  Blackboard 7 will not be available to users during this 24-hour outage period.


Manassas Campus: Network Outage in Progress - RESOLVED | posted 7/21/208

ITSS Engineers and campus support personnel have resolved the network outage at Manassas Campus. All network services including email, internet and telecoms, have been restored.

Manassas Campus is currently experiencing a network outage. All network services, including internet and email are not available at this time. Campus Support is working with B&G to determine if the outage is the result of a power loss. There is currently no estimated time to restoration of network services.


Alexandria Campus:  Network Outage Notice, Sunday July 13

The Alexandria Campus network will be unavailable during multiple periods of time between 8am and 2pm this Sunday, July 13, so that 2 new Uninterruptible Power Supplies can be installed to replace older equipment in the main communications room and the server room.

 

For anyone who is on campus during that time on Sunday, computers and phones will be affected.  Computers will not be able to access the Internet, e-mail and local resources, and the phones will also be unavailable


Online Admissions Scheduled Outage: 8PM, Mon, 6/30/08 - 9PM, Thu, 7/03/08

Beginning today, Monday, June 30, 2008, and ending Thursday, July 3, 2008, VCCS will be performing setup changes and application updates to the Online Admissions servers. As a result of this maintenance, Students and Online Admissions Staff will not be able to access the Online Admissions application for one hour on each of these four (4) days between 8:00PM and 9:00 PM.

Woodbridge Campus Power Outage:  Closed Monday, 6/23/2008

As a result of sever weather, Woodbridge Campus (WO) has experienced a power outage.  There are currently no services available.  WO will be closed for the remainder of today, Monday, June 23, 2008.  All classes and other activities have been discontinued for this evening.

VCCS is currently experiencing network problems affecting My VCCS, Student Email and Blackboard.  During the outage period, Blackboard users can access Blackboard through the following URL: http://learn.vccs.edu.  Student email can be access using the following URL:  email.vccs.edu.    You may also be able to access SIS 8.9 by logging in directly via the following URL:  https://sa89.vccs.edu.  However, we have reports that some users are not able to get in, and those who are getting in find the service running slowly and\or timing out.  VCCS Engineers are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue.  There is currently no estimated time to restoration of services.

ERROR MESSAGE: Enrollment Transaction – RESOLVED | posted 5/28/2008 7:30am

VCCS has resolved the problem that caused an error message yesterday when users attempted to enroll students via the Enrollment Request and Quick Enroll pages. If you experience continued difficulty with student enrollment, please call the IT Help Desk.



ERROR MESSAGE:  Enrollment Transaction | posted 5/27/2008 3:00pm

Students are able to enroll and drop through Self Service without any problems.  Staff members, however, are receiving the following error message on the Enrollment Request and Quick Enroll pages:
 
Invalid Access to Enrollment Transaction. (14640,69) User does not  have access to enrollment transaction. The transaction was not processed.

VCCS has been notified of this issue and ITS Engineers are working to resolve the problem.  There is currently no time to resolution.

VCCS has resolved the problems that affected student email access over the past few days for some users.  Student email is now available on all servers.

VCCS continues to work with Mirapoint to resolve the problems that are affecting student email for some users.  As part of the repair procedure, single sign-on from My VCCS into email has been temporarily disabled.  Users who are not on an affected mail server, and who were able to access their student email today, can still access their student email accounts by going to https://email.vccs.edu and logging on with their My VCCS username and password.

VCCS reports that, currently, some students may not be able to access their email.   VCCS Engineers are working with the vendor, Mirapoint, to resolve this issue.  There is currently no time to resolution.

Reston Center:  Power Shutdown Friday, May 16, 5PM – Monday, May 19, 8AM

Reston Center will be performing electrical maintenance beginning Friday, May 16, 2008 at 5:00 PM and ending Monday, May 19, 2008 at 8:00AM.  As a result, Reston Center will be without power during the maintenance window.


Power Shutdown: Annandale Campus, Thursday, May 15 2AM – 7AM

Dominion Power has informed us that they will shut down power to the Annandale Campus on Thursday morning, May 15, 2008 from 2:00 AM – 7:00 AM. As a result of the power shutdown, there may be some intermittent outages to email and local resources on the Annandale Campus. The college website will be remain available from the back-up location. The power will be restored to the campus by 7:00 AM.


Outage Comcast Cable Channels: Alexandria 72, Arlington 73 | Posted 5/8/2008

A cable was cut in Maryland that resulted in outages of our Comcast video feeds on Channel 72 in Alexandria and Channel 73 in Arlington. Engineers are working to restore the television service.


Annandale Campus: Morning Network Problems - RESOLVED | Posted 5/6/2008

This morning at approximately 6:30 AM, Annandale Campus experienced a series of network outages that affected internet, email and telephone services. ITSS Engineers resolved the network issues by 7:30 AM. All internet, email and telephone services have been restored. NVCC - All Campuses: Verizon Network Issues – RESOLVED | Posted 5/3/2008

Verizon has resolved the problems that resulted in Friday evening’s network outages. All NVCC internet, email and inter-campus telephone services have been restored. If you experience any continued difficulty in accessing NVCC network services, please contact the IT Help Desk.

The backup to the college website is now up and running.  Once world wide DNS replication has been completed, NOVAs home page will again be visible to the outside world.  The home page will relay updated information via a ‘crawl’ at the top of the site.

As a result of Annandale's remote network outage issues, email access has been affected at all NOVA campuses. Pitney Bowes and ELI have also reported that they do not have telecom services (telephone, fax).

Verizon is working with ITSS Engineers to resolve the issue. There is currently no estimated time to restoration of campus services.

We are currently still having problems with some of our mail servers.  Therefore, some people may still be experiencing random, intermittent loss of their email access, including email access via the web. ITSS Engineers are working with Dell to restore full email service to all mail servers.

Late this morning VCCS experienced an interruption in their network which has affected NovaConnect (SIS 8.9), student email and Blackboard.  Currently, some of the services have been restored.  Users may still experience intermittent service outages while VCCS continues to work on the problem.  There is no estimated time to restoration of full service.


Woodbridge External Telephone Service Outage

Woodbridge Campus is currently unable to receive external telephone calls.  Intra-campus calls are going through.  Verizon is working with Woodbridge Campus support to resolve the problem.  There is currently no estimated time to resolution.

Sporadic NVCC Network Outages: All Campuses - Resolved

Blackboard: Slow Response - Resolved

Blackboard 7 Production has been performing slowly today.  It has received an approximate 40% usage increase over the peak hours for the Fall 2007 semester.  VCCS Engineers believe that they have tracked the problem down to a portal module.  They have disabled this module and the problem is gradually resolving itself. However, Blackboard performance is still somewhat slow and VCCS Engineers are continuing to work on improving performance.

If you received an incomplete grade for a Fall 07 Blackboard course or are completing an ELI Fall 07 Blackboard course, use My Nova on NOVA’s homepage or use the URL - http://learn.vccs.edu – to access your FA 07 Blackboard courses. If you cannot find the course on the new Blackboard 7 servers, please contact the IT Help Desk.

If you are taking a Spring 08 course that will use Blackboard, you will not be able to access any Blackboard Spring 08 courses until after January 10.


AIS Password Reset Issue - Resolved

The issues related to AIS user password resets failing with blank pages in browser windows and AIS security page problems in MyVCCS should be fixed now. Corrective measures were made at 11am Friday morning and current reports indicate that the issue are resolved.

VCCS is experiencing an AIS password reset problem.  AIS users who have either forgotten their password, or had it expire, are currently unable to reset their passwords.   VCCS Engineers are aware of the problem and are looking for its root cause and solution. 

As a temporary work-around, VCCS is resetting the flag which indicates a password has expired to allow for an extra 20 days of password activity.  This will prevent passwords from expiring while the problem is being worked on.  

For users who have forgotten their password, please call the IT Help Desk.  The IT Help Desk will notify VCCS on your behalf and follow-up with you pending their recommended remediation

Throughout this 100-hour maintenance window, there is an estimated downtime of 4-hours per mailbox during which users may not be able to access their mailboxes. If you are unable to access your mailbox at any time during the outage period, please wait 4-hours before trying to access your mailbox again. Inbound email will not be affected by this mail server maintenance.

Water Leak at Annandale Campus CG Building

VITA is having network connectivity issues due to a fiber cut between NetworkVA and Covanet that occurred this morning in downtown Richmond. As a result, users are unable to connect to VITA mainframe applications such as CIPPS, CARS, DMV, etc. The VITA website is also unavailable. Sprint and Verizon Technicians are trying to repair the fiber cut. No time estimate to restoration of services is currently available.

Alexandria Campus: Incoming External Call Service Outage

As a result of a weekend water leak in the Alexandria Campus main communication room, the electronic cabinets have been disabled.  There is currently no incoming or outgoing Fax service; and, no incoming external call service. 

Alexandria does have incoming, inter-campus 5-digint (1-XXXX) dialing service, however.  Verizon has been notified and campus engineers are awaiting their assessment.
