Mary Anning on Diane Rehm (or vice versa?)

Tracy Chevalier, the author of Girl With A Pearl Earring, has a new book out about the groundbreaking fossil hunter Mary Anning. She was interviewed this week on the Diane Rehm Show, an NPR-syndicated program produced a few miles from here at American University. The new book is called Remarkable Creatures.

She sells sea shells by the seashore (wow, that's even hard to type!)...

Having read the book, I must say it leaves something to be desired. Doesn't do Anning justice and warps part of her history for the sake of adding some romantic drama. A better choice, though not perfect, is Shelley Emling's biography of Anning entitled The Fossil Hunter. For what they're worth, my thoughts on both books made up a recent post on my blog (www.fossilsandotherlivingthings.blogspot.com).
