Walking to my car in the lower NOVA parking lot last week, I saw this:

A closer view:

I was immediately struck that the patterns observed here could be an analogy for another geologic process. Any ideas what occurred to me?

Something to do with plate tectonics...like island arcs?
Convergent plate boundaries. Left continental, right oceanic plate maybe.
Also: grain size fractioning according to water energy.
Or, from right to left: barrier - lagoon - mainland.
Obviously it's a natural levee made of leaves.
Convergent plate boundary including continental plate (curb), "exotic"terrains" (leaves against curb), trench, ocean, and island arc. The analogy even work because there is convergent movement pushing the leaves to the curb likely due to air currents oro wind.
Nice photo!
i see formation of barrier islands... been away from school too long to think of plate boundaries ( :
Rifting?
crystal-settling/fractional crystalliztion!
Glacial moraines?
Anonymous beat me to the punch but I independently recognized the concept before reading his/her comment. But I didn't know the specific word "moraine" although I was familiar with the concept. Googling the word taught me that there are sub-categories of moraines.

Their are different classifications of moraines. "lateral moraines - running parallel to the valley sides"
And other types are also mentioned such as:
medial moraine
interlobate moraine -
ground moraine
terminal moraine
recessional moraines
My first choice given these options would have to be lateral moraine.
