Bill McKibben on political conservatives and climate change. (Orion) - This addresses what I see as a fundamental contradiction in modern political discourse: the fact that a lot of "conservatives" aren't into conserving natural systems. It bugs me & McKibben both.

Though the problem with the disconnect to conservation is by far not limited to just conservatives, the dogmatic, polarizing, take no prisioners approach of conservatism, religious fundamentalism and extreme libertarian ideology over the last 40 years has fostered a culture of insularity, willfull and proud ignorance and outright denial of a scientific and social reality.
Our modern culture is permeated with "it's all about me or my rights" and a refusal to see that we are more than just disconnected consumers in whose greatest aspiration is just to be constantly satiatied by buying things, religious delusions and fast food etc.
It's almost un-American and "politically correct" among these true believers to even consider that mature enagaged citizens have a collective responsibility or obligation to the health of the entiire system.(socially and ecologically)
This pathological sickness unfortunately has spread to other developing nations who will have to painfully and tragically learn as we will, that in this century our mindless short-term thinking, our gross excesses, our profane waste and arrogant attitude of nationalistic or divine entitlement will come back to severly bite us.
I grieve at the destruction and immense loss to the gorgeous biosphere of this planet that our species myopic selfishness will leave for future generations.
