Backyard 'magma'

What happened to these poor hand samples?


My friend and colleague Pete Berquist shot this video of his (successful) attempt to make lava in his own backyard with an acetylene torch:

Note how the basalt makes runny lava, but the granite yields lava so viscous it doesn't even drip!

Cool video. If your friend keeps at this, he could make some basaltic and granitic sculptures or bowls of some kind.

See, this is why I never should have left the W&M crowd. I move to NY and Pete starts doing fun stuff like this...

Now, I just have to find out who's got an acetylene torch in this department. We have LOTS of rocks we can toast.
