Jill Biden joins the staff of NOVA

It was announced today that Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joseph Biden, is teaching as an adjunct professor of English for two classes this spring semester at NOVA's Alexandria Campus. Dr. Biden has a 28-year career as an educator, having held a 15-year appointment as a professor of English at the Stanton/Wilmington campus of Delaware Technical and Community College where she taught composition and developmental English. She holds a Master's degree in English from Villanova University and a Master's degree in reading from West Chester University. She earned a doctorate in education from the University of Delaware in 2007.

Welcome, Dr. Biden!

Wait....

You can get a Masters degree in READING?

I might need to re-evaluate my life choices...

btw my word verification is "grade". First time it was ever really a word.

If she has "15-year appointment as a professor of English", why can't she get professor position, instead of adjunct professor?

...Presumably because she doesn't have time? Full-time English instructors teach a lot more than two classes. Then there's advising and committee work... I know I work 7 days a week during the semester, and I'm betting she's got some other engagements on her agenda! :)

SOOOOOOO COOOOL!
Prepare 2 see allot more ppl self auditing her class just 2 c her. But alals, since she has a Secret Service detail they'll prolly be checkin IDs & only allowing registerred students in.

Now after Michelle gets Malia/Natasha settled, I'd love 2 see her resume her law career. Cherie Booth (PM Blair's wife) didnt stop being a judge ...she even has a baby while (the 1st time in 150yrs (since 1849) that a PM had a son in office ) while in office!

I'd LOVE for her to be my professor.
Only I doubt I'll be able to concentrate with her just feet away from me.
He's a been my role model for some time now :)

Dear Dr. Jill Biden,
As the Chair of the NEA Non-Tenure Track Faculty Caucus, I would like to talk to you about the multiple issues faced by part-time or "adjunct" faculty in the community colleges. I have taught French in San Diego for the past 21 years, applied for both FT positions and have always taught at least a full load. For many years, I have realized that my 47,000 PT colleagues and I in California will most likely never get tenured positions, job security, health benefits or a fair salary for our work and our educational back-ground. For my 133% load, I earn about half of a fulltime salary and pay my own Kaiser premium. My students meet with me on my own time because the college doesn't consider office hours for over half of the classes taught here are important to the academic success of our students.

What can you do to help make our community colleges a better place to learn for our students and a better place to work for the thousands of "temporary" adjunct faculty, like myself, who teach for years without the support of our community colleges and our states.
Merci beaucoup ,
