Yellowstone photos
Today, some shots from my time in Yellowstone National Park last summer. Here's Mammoth Hot Springs:
Close-up of the travertine deposits at Mammoth:

Norris Geyser Basin, slime:
Norris Geyser Basin's loneliest tree:
More slime, this time two colors:
Nasty patch of slime. Looks like snot:
Bison herd:
Columnar jointing in basalt:
Me showing you where the columnar jointing is. (I'm pointing at it...)
Strata exposed in the Tower area:
And here they are again, labelled:
Lastly, heading north out of Yellowstone back to I-90 and Bozeman, here's a weathered-out Eocene dike in the Paradise Valley. The dike is more resistant to weathering than the rock it cuts through, so it stands up as a "wall"-looking feature.

Very cool photos. Have you ever taken the northeastern route out of Yellowstone, which goes over a high pass (probably not open yet), and then down into some small town - ah, Red Lodge, MT? It's a very nice drive, great scenery and geology.
I am really jealouse. You get to see all these nice and beautiful places. I could drive for 50, no maybe 100km, into any direction and still all I would get to see is green and flat terrain that at best has a few rolling tiny hills from the last cold period.
Hey Silver Fox,
Yes, I have taken that Beartooth Plateau route from Red Lodge into NE Yellowstone. Awesome scenery: classic glacial topography, huge vistas. Really incredible; I want to spend more time there. Plus the Red Lodge Brewery's "Glacier Ale" is my favorite beer in the world.

Ah, forgot about the Glacier Ale... now I'm thirsty!
Hey Callan, there are actually 3 geobloggers in Bozeman this summer. Would you want to meet up for dinner sometime when you are here for MSSE?
A great idea. Anyone else out there in the geoblogosphere going to be in Bozeman this summer? We could call it a 'conference'...
I might make it to Yellowstone this summer, Bozeman is just over the hill to the north, right? So, possibly... Don't have a time frame or schedule yet. Would most likely be the end of July, I think.
Silver Fox, Sounds good! Keep me updated via my NOVA e-mail address, okay? --CB
